Hertfordshire Matchplay Championship 2009

The Hertfordshire Professional Match Play Final took place at Brocket Hall GC after six months of closely fought encounters all across the county.

Peter Cherry from Ashridge GC and Stephen Harris of Harpenden GC played the Palmerston Course on warm and windy afternoon in September.

Harris took an early lead but was pegged back by consecutive birdies from Cherry. Harris then took the initiative with a birdie of his own and reached the turn with solid pars to lead by two at the turn, both players getting birdies at nine.

Cherry squared the match with pars at eleven and twelve. The lead went to Cherry at thirteen only to be pulled back immediately, by Harris. Cherry’s par at sixteen was enough to take the initiative again, but a par at eighteen saw superb driving by Harris put the match into extra holes. Conclusion on the first extra hole saw a splendid birdie from Cherry seal the title and become the seventh different title holder in as many years.
